A new study reveals a significant shortfall in housing production in the Kansas City region, with the area lacking up to 24,000 housing units. Will Ruder, executive vice-president of the Homebuilders Association of Greater Kansas City, emphasizes the urgency of addressing this crisis, citing issues like restrictive construction codes, insufficient lots, labor shortages, and limited financing. Ruder advocates for local law adjustments to foster development while maintaining environmental considerations.

Councilmember Wes Rogers proposes updating Kansas City’s 2021 municipal energy code, which aims to make homes ready for electric vehicles and solar panels, to attract more developers. Despite these challenges, Rogers insists that affordable housing must remain the city’s top priority, supported by the Homebuilders Association.
