Kansas City cannot change its trajectory without fundamentally changing how it addresses violence, economic mobility, and access to care. Newhouse is advancing the first fully integrated, prevention-to-independence campus in our region — designed to attack the root drivers of instability and create lasting community change at a scale no single organization can achieve alone.
The proposed campus will be built on a six-acre plot adjacent to Newhouse's existing facility on Independence Ave, with street visibility and direct community access. This is not an expansion of services — it is the creation of critical, permanent infrastructure for Kansas City.
Newhouse's cross-sector model brings together social services, healthcare, workforce partners, law enforcement, courts, and child welfare — aligned in a single service delivery system. This approach reduces fragmentation, minimizes re-traumatization, and ensures individuals and families can move forward rather than cycle through disconnected systems.
With significant philanthropic commitments already in place, a $2M grant submission to the Sunderland Foundation in process, and multiple tax credit vehicles available, this project represents a rare convergence of need, readiness, and momentum. The Way Home is engaged as a potential housing partner for the residential component of the campus.
Newhouse is raising $3M to acquire the six-acre Independence Ave property — the foundation of the community impact campus. Significant commitments are already in place, including a $2M Sunderland Foundation grant application in process.
The Way Home connects builders, lenders, and funders to deliver affordable homes and community infrastructure at the speed Kansas City needs.
